ENTERPRISE ZONE PROGRAM

The Enterprise Zones (EZ) partnership is a joint state-county effort intended to stimulate—via tax and other incentives—certain types of business activity, job preservation, and job creation in areas where they are most appropriate or most needed.

In 2007, the State's EZ coordinators from each county met to discuss concerns, prioritize interests, and discuss ways to make the EZ program more effective. The EZ coordinators identified agriculture as their top priority.

Act 143, Session Laws of Hawaii 2008 allows agricultural businesses to continue to qualify for enterprise zone (EZ) benefits in case of force majeure events. Includes agricultural growth as one of the EZ purposes. This new ammendment to the EZ program helped encourage diversified agriculture in Hawai´i. In the past, small farming operations found it difficult to meet the hiring requirements. If farmers could satisfy EZ requirements, lower prices could be charged to retail stores making their products more competitive against overseas products. In addition, competitive salaries could be provided to retain workers and invest in business capital.

If your business (or a branch of your business) is eligible and is located in an Enterprise Zone (EZ), you can reduce your state taxes and receive other county benefits for up to seven years by satisfying the EZ hiring and gross receipts requirements.
